laboratory work
Laboratory workplaces do not necessarily have to be more dangerous than office workplaces. Working alone is permitted from an occupational health and safety perspective if certain framework conditions are met
The explanations of Section 8 of the DGUV Rule 100-001 can be used to assess whether there is dangerous work. It mentions, for example, working in gas-hazardous areas or handling particularly hazardous substances in laboratories as hazardous.
In practice, it is in the hands of laboratory management to organize and ensure safe work in the laboratory.
Processing industries
Thanks to extensive automation, industry today works entire night, Sunday and public holidays with minimal personnel deployment. And it is expected that the number of lone workers will continue to increase in the future. Lone worker protection must therefore adapt to these sometimes completely new conditions in order to ensure the level of protection for lone workers in production and manufacturing.
construction industry
It is often assumed that when working alone, there is only one person on site, e.g. one person on a construction site or in an object. But that is often not the case. There may be several people on the construction site or in the building. The decisive factor for working alone is whether the person concerned is working within sight and calling range. Here is an example: There are two fitters working in an object. The two meet at the start of the work and then go to their work areas, which are on different levels. If one of the two people gets injured, it is possible that the other person is not aware of it. It would only be after the end of the shift that the other person would realize that something is wrong.
cleaning work
When cleaning work is carried out outside normal business hours and employees are employed alone in a building or on the extensive company premises (Working alone), there may be special requirements for the safety concept.
In principle, it is not prohibited for cleaners to work alone in areas outside operating hours if an appropriate emergency chain is ensured depending on the risk. However, if this is not the case, the employer must take special protective measures.
Forestry and agriculture
Forest work and especially timber harvesting are among the most dangerous jobs in forestry and agriculture. In no job is the lone worker as isolated from other people as in forestry in the depths of the forests
Modern emergency call systems such as the Life Tel series make it much easier to quickly find injured forest workers thanks to GPS positioning. In the case of a passive or volitional alarm, sensors in Life Tel register whether the forester is still moving and automatically triggers the alarm after a certain period of time (dead man switching).
Warehousing and logistics
The personal emergency signal devices in our Life Tel series have been specially developed to secure working alone. If hazardous work in your company is carried out by an employee alone, you must ensure appropriate technical or organizational personal protection measures in addition to general protective measures. As a personal emergency signal device, the Life Tel series meets all the requirements of the relevant DGUV 112-139
security service
In particularly vulnerable areas, security personnel sometimes travel in pairs, but if there is a manageable risk, checks are often carried out alone. Even though burglary — for example in a museum — is certainly not expected on a daily basis, the resulting risk is real and must be considered in terms of employee protection. Inspection trips in which employees patrol alone by car also fall under the heading of working alone.
handicraft
A handyman. (in small businesses and during assembly), who works alone in his workshop, is also a lone worker. Of course, this also applies to activities that are carried out alone at the customer's site. Here too, appropriate security measures are more than recommended. It should always be ensured that help can be called quickly in an emergency. Even “simple” manual work may pose an increased risk under certain circumstances. Even minor risks can become major if you are unable to alert rescue workers in the worst case scenario, for example.
Judicial authorities
Are public sector employees more at risk than other employees? As part of a research project, 36 municipalities from 15 federal states were surveyed. Among other things, it was found that 71% of the interviewees have already experienced aggression. A high proportion of interviewees stated that respect and inhibition had fallen.
In addition to accident risks, there are also increasing risks from third parties, for example in psychiatry, in prison or in municipal authorities with public contact. If the Life Tel is torn off the body or if an employee has to flee from a dangerous situation, the rapid movement is released thanks to the Escape and loss alerts sends out an emergency signal.
