What is a PNA? (Emergency signal system for persons)

The term personal emergency signal system (PNA) refers to a technical device that triggers an alarm either manually or automatically in emergency situations to request assistance. This alarm is signaled both acoustically and visually on the device itself and in a connected receiving center. Personal emergency signal systems are used in various scenarios, in particular at individual workstations where employees work outside the sight and call range of other people. They are used to ensure that, in the event of an emergency, first aid can be provided quickly at the scene of an accident.

The receiving center, which is connected to personal emergency signal systems, enables the operator to identify the alarm-triggering device, determine its location and establish a voice connection in order to contact the person concerned. At the same time, rescue workers and other people can be alerted to react quickly.

Here are some important definitions of terms associated with personal emergency signal systems:

  • PNG (personal emergency signal device): Portable wireless signaling devices that trigger an alarm in the receiving center in an emergency. This can be done either by manually pressing an emergency button (volitional personal alarm) or automatically in accordance with predefined alarm conditions (volitional personal alarm).

  • Emergency call app: An app that makes it possible to use the smartphone as a personal emergency signal device. It can trigger both manual and automatic personal alarms and transfer important information to the receiving center.

There are two main types of personal emergency signal systems:

  • Radio-based systems: These include radios with an emergency button and a position switch, which are carried by employees. If necessary, the receiving center can be contacted via voice communication.
  • Cellular-based systems: This uses cloud-based apps that are installed on smartphones. Employees are located via GPS, WLAN or Bluetooth beacons.

The selection and installation of a personal emergency signal system depends on various factors, including the work environment, risk level and legal requirements. Expert advice can help you make the right decision.

Personal emergency signal systems are used in situations where dangerous work or working alone takes place. They increase employee safety and ensure a quick response in an emergency. This helps motivate employees and at the same time meets legal requirements regarding occupational safety and accident prevention.
